General information about Bali

Welcome to the most popular holiday destination of Indonesia. Bali is famous because of its beautiful beaches, its friendly population and its climate. And as you have seen above, the "island of the gods" is rich of cultural and religious rituals.

National parks

The largest national park can be found in the west of the island and is called Taman Nasional Bali Barat. It has been created by the Dutch in the past century, to preserve its precious natural resources and beautiful birds. For bird spotters this is definitely worth seeing if you plan to visit Bali. Further you may visit the monkey forest in Ubud, or the Kintamani volcano park. The highest mountain and volcano is Mount Agung, which is 3.142 meters high, and very suitable for trekking. The most impressive waterfall Gitgit can be found near Singaraja, and is about 50 meters high. Especially in the raining season this becomes a true spectacle.

A very important reason for tourists to come to Bali is its subtropical climate. With an average around 30 degrees Celsius and almost sunny every day, it is highly comfortable. For the ones who prefer a bit cooler they can go up near to the mountain lakes of Mount Batur or Kintamani, the temperature there can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler. The rainy season lasts from November until February, and it may be a bit more humid during this period. See below for the average temperature and rainfall.

Bali is known as "island of the gods", mainly because of over 20.000 temples. These are built by the mainly Hindu population, where they hold daily ceremonies. Balinese people are proud to be Hindu and dress up daily for doing ceremonies. In Bali you may also find Christians and Muslims, and with them churches and mosques as well. Indonesians in general live in harmony, despite the religion they follow.

Getting there and going around

The main entrance port of Bali is the Denpasar International Airport Ngurah Rai, located in south Bali near Kuta. From Denpasar flights go directly to Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
In Indonesia there is a large choice of (low budget) air carriers. The most famous are Air Asia, Lion Air, Citilink, Sriwijaya Air, Merpati Airlines, Wings Air, Transnusa, and of course Garuda Indonesia.
Further Bali can be reached by ferry from Lombok, which operates from 4.00am until 11.00pm and embarks at Padang Bai in Bali. From Java the ferry arrives in Gilimanuk and the service is available 24 hours per day.
In Bali itself there is a lack of good public transport. Recently one bus company started operating in Bali: Trans Sarbagita. Especially for route DenpaSAR, BAdung, GIanyar and TAbanan. For the initial route; Trans Sarbagita serves for route Batubulan to Nusa Dua and through the hotels conclave of Nusa Dua area.

The most common way of going around is by renting a car (with driver), by taxi or by motorbike. Be aware that when you drive yourself as a non-Indonesian you need an international driving license. Police regularly checks this in road blocks.
